   Christian Aid

Envelope Collection

Once again St. Mary’s Church and the parish as a whole have enthusiastically supported Christian Aid Week.  The house to house and church envelope collection amounted to £1180.31 (plus gift aid) which is an excellent response at a difficult time for charity collections and our collectors deserve a special thank you.

The Big Breakfast, which this year was held in the church hall, was a double celebration being held on the morning of the Royal Wedding, with television coverage courtesy of the ingenuity of Fr. Peter Wragg.   The ‘Dream Team’ of the fiery Chef, Matt Wood, the very suave Head Waiter, Trevor Amey and his agile team – Carol Ingram, Vicky Peattie, David Stone-Lee and Claire Wood served the delicious menu with ‘Harry’s Full English Breakfast’ and ‘Sandringham Smoked Salmon Bagels’ proving the most popular items.  I must thank our generous sponsors – The Coffee Lounge at the Wheatsheaf for their lovely selection of fresh scones, J. Heath and Son Butchers and Greens Greengrocers both of Albert Parade for the wonderful bangers, bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms.  Donations of food for the breakfast were also kindly given by the Co-Operative Store, Albert Parade, Morrisons, Sainsburys and Waitrose.  With this help and the generosity of the diners we raised £384.69 (plus gift aid).  It was great fun and lovely to see a wide variety of ages tucking in and enjoying themselves.

On behalf of Christian Aid I must thank everyone who contributed in any way, including the stalwart money counters.   Christian Aid Week 2018 highlighted in particular the plight of the millions of displaced people in the world and this work, together with their ongoing fight for justice and against poverty, will go on.

Thank you

Polly Stone-Lee
